AACI's Physician Clinical Leadership Initiative (PCLI) will host a webinar titled "Medical-Legal Partnerships: Breaking Barriers in Cancer Care" at 2:00 pm eastern time on Tuesday, June 9.
Medical-legal partnerships (MLPs) are a proven, data-supported model of care that integrates legal services into health care settings to address the social, economic, and environmental factors that impact patient health. For many patients with cancer, civil legal problems emerge during treatment and can quickly escalate into crises. These health-harming legal needs, including housing instability, employment loss, and insurance denials, often compound the many challenges faced by patients. Backed by robust data, MLPs can play a critical role in reducing barriers to treatment and improving outcomes and have now taken their rightful place as a critical innovation in both health care and legal service delivery.
This webinar will explore the role of MLPs in cancer care through a patient-centered story, an overview of the history and evolution of the model, and real-world examples of hospital-based implementation. Attendees will gain practical insights into how MLPs can be integrated into their cancer centers to better support patients and advance more equitable, patient-centered care.
The webinar will be moderated by PCLI Steering Committee Chair Paula M. Fracasso, MD, PhD, FACP, VCU Massey Comprehensive Cancer. Presenters are Randye Retkin, JD, LegalHealth, New York Legal Assistance Group; Allison Held, JD, Virginia Commonwealth University Health; and Orrin Pail, MD, MPH, Laura and Isaac Perlmutter Cancer Center at NYU Langone Health.
