Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, one of the nation’s premier healthcare institutions, is conducting a national search for a senior head and neck cancer research scientist. Cedars-Sinai Cancer sees over 4800 new cases of cancer per year and is part of Cedars-Sinai Health System, a rapidly expanding vertically integrated health enterprise with practices located in Southern California, including Tower Hematology-Oncology, The Angeles Clinic and Research Institute, Cedars-Sinai Valley Oncology Medical Group, the Marina Del Rey Hospital, Hunt Cancer Institute at Torrance Memorial, and Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.
Our search will identify an accomplished, federally funded research scientist with a demonstrated successful research program in head and neck cancer. The candidate will work with medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, surgical oncologists, endocrinologists, radiologists, otolaryngologists, pathologists, neurologists, and population and basic scientists to establish a first-rate head and neck cancer research program at Cedars-Sinai. This position will leverage translational opportunities and bridge physicians and researchers across the Cedars Sinai enterprise including all system facilities.
Position Summary: The objective of the position is to develop a comprehensive translational research (bench to bedside) program to study the pathophysiology, prevention, detection and treatment of primary and metastatic head and neck cancers. The candidate will work collaboratively with cancer physicians and investigators across the Cedars-Sinai Health System in the development of research, clinical and educational programs. The candidate must create the scientific culture and environment that promote the submission of research grants by Head and Neck Cancer Program members. The candidate is responsible for identifying, promoting and mentoring young investigators in head and neck cancer research as well as participating with the Director of the Cancer Center in securing philanthropic support for the program. Primary responsibilities will be promoting excellence (clinical, research, education) of the Head and Neck Cancer Program including but not limited to the following:
Clinical: If so qualified, provide professional and consultative expertise in head and neck cancer therapy.
Research: Engage in productive peer-reviewed funded research in head and neck cancer, either basic, translational, population, health services areas and/or clinical trials which support the Cancer Center’s strategic plan. Work to increase research funding from external sponsors including federal, industry and foundation.
Education: Develop and/or contribute to the development of training programs in head and neck cancer related sciences with institutional educational leaders. Identify and promote the mentoring of young investigators in head and neck cancer research. Contribute to the training of clinical and research fellows and laboratory staff in both translational and basic sciences in head and neck cancer.
Programmatic: Contribute to the development of a comprehensive research program to conduct basic, translational clinical and prevention research in head and neck cancer. Promote the success for obtaining external support through NIH, foundations, biotech/pharma and other extramural agencies for research. Advise and foster participation by interested and qualified attending staff physicians and trainees in relevant research areas. Provide mentorship and guidance for researchers in the program as needed.
Collaborate within a team composed of the Head and Neck Cancer Program leaders in Surgical Oncology, Radiation Oncology, Medical Oncology, Endocrinology, Radiology and Pathology. Coordinate with members of the Head and Neck Cancer Program to maintain high quality standards and quality assurance programs. Assist the directors of the Head and Neck Cancer Program to organize, implement and direct fiscally responsible research, clinical and educational programs in head and neck cancer. Recruit faculty focused on prevention, translational or clinical head and neck cancer research. Work with the Director of the Cancer Center in securing philanthropic support for the program and marketing the program throughout the loco-regional and national/international communities. Participate in appropriate divisional, departmental and institutional committees and programs.
Required Qualifications: • Five or more years’ experience in head and neck cancer research (basic, translational, prevention or clinical). • MD, PhD or MD/PhD or equivalent from an accredited university. • For MD or MD/PhD, Board Certification in Internal Medicine, Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, Hematology/Oncology, Radiation Oncology or Pathology by the corresponding American Board or the equivalent. • National or international prominence in head and neck cancer research, with outstanding peer-reviewed publications, proven abilities as Principal Investigator and mentor. • Demonstrated ability to obtain and sustain federal funding (NIH, NSF, DOD, etc.) • For MD or MD/PhD or equivalent, ability to obtain an unrestricted California medical license as Physician.
