Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University (Winship) and the Emory University School of Medicine are seeking an administrative leader for the Department of Radiation Oncology - providing expert leadership for the academic, research, and clinical programs and initiatives. The incumbent will serve as a strong cohort and strategic administrative partner to departmental and institutional leaders, assuming a high level of accountability while building and fostering collaborative relationships across all academic, research, and clinic services. Those who will be considered for the role should have considerable experience in a department of radiation oncology within an academic medical center. Ideal candidates will understand and thrive in working in a highly matrixed environment; have strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to build collegial relationships to support the mission of the department both internally and externally; able to balance the needs of a strong department with highly successful efforts in research, clinical care, and education. This departmental administrator will serve as a subject matter expert for the radiation oncology revenue cycle, operations and administrative functions across a highly complex health system with seven sites of care, a growing affiliate network, and a strong research program that continues to expand in size and scope.
As the National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center for the state of Georgia, Winship is at the forefront of cancer research and discovery. Winship develops and delivers some of the world’s most effective ways to prevent, detect, diagnose, and treat cancer. Winship patients are seen by multidisciplinary teams that develop individualized treatment plans to meet each patient’s specific needs, including access to over 250 clinical trials. Winship physicians are experts in specific cancers and use the latest in precision medicine, targeted therapies, and advanced technologies to achieve the best outcomes for their patients.
Emory’s Department of Radiation Oncology has a tripartite mission of providing outstanding patient and family-centered medical care, educating the next generation of cancer caregivers and researchers, and executing paradigm-defining cancer research. The department is growing in all three areas, is ranked fifth in NIH funding among U.S. radiation oncology departments in 2018, and currently has 46 faculty distributed among Divisions of Clinical Affairs, Cancer Biology, and Medical Physics. Faculty members are nationally recognized for subspecialty care in areas including pediatric oncology, brain tumors, lymphoma, and head and neck, breast, genitourinary, and lung cancer. The department operates seven clinical sites in the Atlanta area, including the Emory Proton Therapy Center.
JOB DESCRIPTION: Reporting to the Chairman of the Department of Radiation Oncology and Winship VP of Cancer Services, the Clinical Administrator serves as a strategic partner to Winship leaders by providing administrative, financial, and operational oversight supporting the department’s tripartite mission. Manages financial and operational planning efforts for all radiation oncology areas to include budget management, space allocation, equipment management, and clinic regulatory requirements. Serves as a liaison with all levels of administration, faculty and outside organizations to coordinate departmental business, accomplish directives, and negotiate contracts. Manages the faculty and staff hiring process, serving as a liaison in sourcing, hiring, and developing talent. Provides strategic operational support in new ventures/partnerships, continuum of care business development planning and expansion, and research administration. In collaboration with physician leadership, assists in defining and implementing the clinical programming for multispecialty/multidisciplinary delivery of care. Develops, supports and leads initiatives for Radiation Oncology aimed at care improvement and efficient operations. Ensures the quality, safety and effectiveness of all operations. Continually assesses and leads improvement of systems and processes to ensure strategic plans and commitments are achieved. Establishes and enforces standards to ensure an exceptional patient experience. Ensures physician satisfaction by developing positive relationships with physicians, monitoring satisfaction and proactively addressing issues.
ADDITIONAL JOB DUTIES: Plans, coordinates, and is accountable for major administrative and clinical activities including grants and contracts, budget planning, financial analysis, data processing operations, and human resources management for multiple departments within the School of Medicine and or satellite locations at other affiliate institutions. Administers organizational policies and procedures within the department. Handles human resource related issues, and is accountable for the hiring, disciplinary, termination and salary decisions which are made for the department. Works with Department Chair to develop, administer and monitor the capital equipment, operations, and personnel budgets. Develops plans to ensure that generated clinical revenues increase each year while limiting expenses. Works with the department chairman to establish goals and objectives for the department(s); monitors progress towards their achievement. Develops and implements various clinical and administrative programs to enhance staff skills and to improve the effectiveness of existing clinical services; develops new programs to ensure the growth of the department and meet the changing demands for new services. Acts as liaison between management and other schools/departments concerning clinical activities and issues. Ensures required record-keeping is maintained. Develops and implements formal training and development programs for staff. Performs related responsibilities as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Master's degree in business, finance, or related science field and seven years of professional business or management experience which includes three years in a clinical or healthcare environment, OR equivalent combination of experience, education, and training.
