AACI to Co-Host Congressional Briefing on HPV-Related Cancers

AACI is among nine partner organizations that will co-host a congressional briefing from 12:00 to 1:30 pm on Thursday, June 27. "Let's End HPV-Related Cancers" will provide an overview of the global impact of cancers related to human papillomavirus (HPV) and opportunities to reduce the burden of these cancers, both in the U.S. and worldwide.

One year after the World Health Organization director general released a call to action to eliminate cervical cancer globally, U.S. medical associations and public health organizations are issuing their own call to eliminate HPV-related cancers—which also include anal, penile, vulvar, and vaginal cancers—in the U.S. This can be accomplished through gender-neutral HPV vaccination and evidence-based cancer screening, in alignment with the goals set forth by U.S. Healthy People 2020

During the briefing, international experts will discuss public health policy and strategies to achieve the goal of eliminating cervical cancer and other HPV-related cancers. Panelists include Anna R. Giuliano, PhD, director of the Center for Immunization and Infection Research in Cancer at Moffitt Cancer Center; NIH Distinguished Investigator John T. Schiller, PhD, deputy chief of the National Cancer Institute’s Laboratory of Cellular Oncology, Center for Cancer Research; Melinda Wharton, MD, MPH, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Immunization Services Division, National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases; Vicki Benard, PhD, chief of the CDC’s Cancer Surveillance Branch, Division of Cancer Prevention and Control; Julie S. Torode, PhD, deputy CEO and director of advocacy and networks, Union for International Cancer Control, and Jason Mendelsohn, patient advocate and oral cancer survivor.

The briefing will be moderated by Gilbert S. Omenn, MD, PhD, director of the University of Michigan Center for Computational Medicine and Bioinformatics. The Honorable Kathy Castor, U.S. Representative for the 14th District of Florida, will serve as honorary congressional co-chair. AACI members and congressional staffers are invited to participate in a Q&A during the briefing, which will be held in room 2044 of the Rayburn House Office Building on Capitol Hill.

In addition to AACI, the briefing is co-hosted by the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR), Moffitt Cancer Center, Biden Cancer Initiative, American Cancer Society Cancer Advocacy Network (ACS CAN), American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), Prevent Cancer Foundation, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, and the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC).
