The University of Arizona Cancer Center (UACC) is seeking a creative versatile, and motivated Communications Officer to document and promote our cancer center's research, educational programs, and other activities on the web, in print, social media and through other media. This exciting opportunity offers a front row seat to work closely with an innovative and collegial community of investigators. The primary focus of the Communications Officer’s effort will be to raise the profile of the UACC, particularly with the goal of recruiting faculty, talented graduate students and postdoctoral scientists who will become future leaders in research, technology and education.

Duties & Responsibilities

The Communications Officer will work in close consultation with our faculty to identify, document, and promote key findings, accomplishments, awards and activities to the wider public. Candidate must be an outstanding science writer/editor capable of understanding scientific papers and lectures and explaining them clearly to non-specialists. The ideal candidate will possess a wide range of skills including experience with website editorial management and maintenance, print and digital graphics design, and other interests and capabilities that would be assets to our communications efforts. The Communications Officer must take initiative to identify and follow through on communications opportunities, collaborating well with our faculty and other staff at UACC, and consistently delivering high-quality results

Researching and writing articles, announcements, and press releases covering the Centers’ research, achievements, awards, grants, education programs and other activities.
Maintain the Department’s website. On a regular basis, this involves gathering and posting basic information such as upcoming events, new publications, faculty and staff profiles, shared resources and donor opportunities. More generally, it involves setting general editorial strategy for building a portfolio of articles, graphics and other content that together provides an accurate, well-rounded, up-to-date and compelling representation of the Cancer Center.
Work closely with Biocom and an external website development agency to oversee top-level efforts to improve the website’s usability, incorporate new content modules and other features into the website, expand user engagement and address technical problems that might arise.
Adhere to and maintain a consistent and professional visual identity for the Department across our communications platforms. This includes conceiving and designing print collateral such as newsletters, brochures, and posters; managing the development of our library of photographic and graphic assets; and creating PowerPoint slides used to promote the Center across campus and externally.
Communicate member activity to the broader UA, UAHS communities and external audiences by continued website development, creation and promotion of special features including magazines and brochures.
Support management, reporting and dissemination for all UACC events, including the regularly scheduled ones (EC, SLC), and special events, workshops, retreats, conferences, and site visits.
Collaborate with UA Communications to generate media interest and coverage of the cancer center activities and discoveries.
Assist in communications within the Cancer Center, including producing an electronic newsletter and other initiatives to promote a shared sense of community and mission among our faculty and staff.
Work closely with the Director on tasks related to outreach and development and fundraising.
Participate in event planning and creation of marketing materials. Provide management, oversight, and directly participate in high profile and significant impact events from planning and development stages through event completion and follow-up.
Serve as the Center’s liaison to the NCI’s Public Affairs Network, as well as to other UA public affairs groups, such as UAHS Office of Public Affairs, Banner Marketing Team, and the UA Marketing Team.
Devise outreach efforts and strategy, and develop cancer outreach implementation plan(s) to reach underserved and minority populations and increase access to patient care and clinical trials.
Partner with Banner communication and marketing teams to develop joint messaging strategies and oncology service line marketing efforts.
Attend and participate in UACC hosted events and other related University events.
Supervise, train, and mentor team members and support their activities as needed.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

An ability to learn, understand, and summarize technical information quickly, and to write about science and technology in a clear, structured, articulate, and persuasive manner for both scientific and lay audiences.
Superior editing and proofreading skills, including an ability to maintain and enforce consistent style.
Experience using online content management systems.
Command of Microsoft Office tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) as well as desktop publishing software for image editing and print design (Photoshop, InDesign, Acrobat).
Strong oral and interpersonal skills, ideally including experience working in an academic environment.
Ability to conceive, initiate, and manage communications projects from start to finish, multi-task, prioritize, and meet deadlines in both collaborative and independent settings.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum of 7 years of related work experience, including 3 years of managerial experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
Bachelor's degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through professional level experience required.

Preferred Qualifications * A Master’s or higher degree is preferred. * Preferred candidates will have extensive writing and communications experience in a relevant scientific field. * Experience working for a scientific journal or experience in the public relations or communications field in a university, not-for-profit, or a corporate environment would also be highly desirable. * Technical expertise with website hosting, architecture, and development, while is not necessary; a familiarity with these topics and experience working on website development projects would be an asset. * A portfolio showing the ability to design professional quality print and graphic publications is a plus. * Four years of related experience in scientific communications.
