Chief of Division of Hematology and Oncology

The University of Vermont Cancer Center

August 5, 2025
The University of Vermont Health Network and Robert Larner, M.D. College of Medicine are conducting a search to appoint the next Chief, Division of Hematology and Oncology.

The Division Chief will lead a division committed to excellence in clinical care, research, and education. As Chief, the physician leader will ensure delivery of high-quality care and services to patients, collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, develop and implement strategic initiatives, and contribute to the overall growth and success of the Division. The Chief will set strategic goals and objectives aligned with the department's mission and vision, including the opportunity to expand cancer care across a rural geographic footprint. Duties include fostering the career development of faculty and other professionals, fostering a collaborative and inclusive work environment, promoting teamwork and excellence in patient care, fostering the academic mission of the Division and Department, and working closely with leadership of the UVM Cancer Center to obtain NCI designation.

The Division of Hematology and Medical Oncology is the academic and clinical leader in the care of patients with blood disorders and cancer in Vermont and northern New York. The division includes 26 physicians based at the UVM medical center, 7 physicians at network sites, 10 research faculty and 22 advanced practice providers.  The combined Hematology/Medical Oncology fellowship program is ACGME-accredited and, beginning in July 2025, will initiate a 3-year expansion from 6 to 9 fellows and incorporate training in rural cancer care delivery.

The Chief should possess a proven track record across multiple areas, including individual scholarship, collaborative clinical leadership, program development, educational excellence, successful faculty recruitment and development, and community engagement. A strong emphasis on working with interdisciplinary teams and collaborative research is essential.  This critical position requires an enthusiastic, entrepreneurial, and collaborative leader dedicated to bringing this Division and Cancer Center to the next level of excellence.

The Department of Medicine has a long and proud tradition of national leadership in innovative clinical care, quality improvement, education and training, cutting-edge research, and community engagement. The Department is deeply committed to a tripartite mission of providing regional leadership in clinical care, educating and training the next generation of clinicians and scientists, and pursuing and sponsoring nationally recognized research.

The University of Vermont Health Network is an academic health system that serves the communities of Vermont and New York's North Country. The Network is also a national leader in health care reform, developing innovative value-based payment models and designing effective care models to serve a largely rural population.

The Robert Larner, M.D. College of Medicine is the seventh oldest medical school in the nation. Clinical partnerships allow medical students to benefit from diverse inpatient, outpatient, and community settings.

The University of Vermont Medical Center is Vermont's premier academic medical center and provides a full range of tertiary-level inpatient, outpatient, and primary care services at multiple locations. It earned the distinction of being designated the region's only Level I Trauma Center.
