As of today, the United States government has not passed a Fiscal Year (FY) 2022 budget. The federal government is currently operating with funding through a Continuing Resolution at spending levels for FY2021 until at least February 18.
Congress has steadily increased funding for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Cancer Institute (NCI) over the last decade. However, funding increases for the NCI have lagged significantly behind those of other NIH institutes. According to Act for NIH, the NCI can only fund about one in eight meritorious research applications. This leaves promising science—even potential cures—unfunded, and may also discourage emerging scientists from pursuing cancer research.
AACI has prepared an advocacy letter to share with your congressional delegation. We encourage you to ask your legislators to complete the FY2022 budget and to fund the NCI at an appropriate level.
