The Association of American Cancer Institutes (AACI) is the only membership association dedicated to academic cancer centers. AACI represents more than 100 premier academic and freestanding cancer centers in the United States and Canada. The association advances the objectives of cancer centers by promoting widespread recognition of the cancer center network, educating policymakers, and fostering partnerships among cancer centers and like-minded organizations to improve the overall quality of cancer care.

Position Summary
The Communications Specialist supports AACI’s communications department through the development, editing, coordination, and execution of content. This role plays a key operational role in producing member and internal communications, meeting materials, digital and print publications, and organizational messaging.

The position requires strong writing and editing skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage recurring and deadline-driven projects in a collaborative, mission-driven environment. Occasional travel to AACI meetings and select external events is required.

Overview of Key Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)

Content Development & Publications

  • Draft, edit, and proofread content for monthly newsletter and editorial series, job postings, press releases and statements, blog posts, targeted emails, and other organizational communications
  • Support production of the AACI annual report by collecting content from AACI departments and assisting with proofreading, editing, and distributing the final report
  • Assist with the production of digital program books, signage, and other meeting-related materials

Digital & Website Communications

  • Maintain and update website content using content management system
  • Draft, edit, coordinate, and approve social media content
  • Work with external social media consultant to monitor performance of digital content and assist with recommendations for future marketing strategy and campaigns

Meeting & Event Communications

  • Draft and edit session descriptions and develop scripts for AACI meetings
  • Prepare slides and presentation materials for AACI leadership
  • Assist with on-site communications tasks, including photography, video recordings, social media, daily summaries, and media inquiries

Organizational & Cross-Departmental Support

  • Draft communications-related reports and proofread departmental reports for Board of Directors meetings
  • Edit public policy, development, events, and programs documents as requested
  • Collaborate with external contractors (including, but not limited to, web developer, social media consultant, graphic designer, event photographer)
  • Respond to media inquiries and assist with press-related communications

Travel
Attend and support AACI and related professional meetings as assigned (two to three meetings per year)

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, public relations, journalism, or related field (or equivalent experience) OR 5 years of relevant experience in communications, marketing, or related field
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to manage multiple projects with competing deadlines

Preferred

  • Experience in a nonprofit, association, health care, or oncology-related organization
  • Familiarity with email marketing platforms, content management systems, social media management tools, and basic graphic design tools
  • Experience tracking and interpreting engagement metrics to inform communications and marketing strategy

Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) Tools
As writing and editing are core functions of this position, application materials should reflect the applicant’s own original thinking, writing ability, and editorial judgment. While AACI policy allows limited use of AI tools for brainstorming or proofreading, substantive AI-generated content should not be submitted as original work. AACI may require candidates to complete a writing or editing exercise during the interview process to assess core competencies.
