The Sr. Manager, Research Support leads the research program teams to ensure successful system implementation and upgrades. Specifically, the Sr. Manager, Research Support oversees the day-to-day operations and resources of research staff and supports programs for their growth and development. Full-time, Miami FL, Hybrid/Remote Options Available

CORE JOB FUNCTIONS                                                                                                             

Conducts meetings with research staff and ensures functions are coordinated in a timely and accurate manner.
Provides technical support and resolves operational problems.
Oversees department budget and identifies areas of opportunity for cost reduction.
Assists in the preparation and publication of manuscripts.
Recruits and trains research staff and prepares performance reports and disciplinary recommendations for the leadership team.
Analyzes reports, data briefs, and auxiliary publications for new topic modules.
Defines and produces indicators for a data visualization platform.
Establishes and continuously assesses the effectiveness of the internal controls within the unit and compliance with University policies and procedures. Ensures employees are trained on controls within the function and on University policy and procedures.

Senior Manager, Proposal Development & Scientific Writing Teams
Department Specific Functions

*Writing and/or editing of federal peer-reviewed biomedical research grants.

* This position works closely with the Executive Director of Cancer Center Operations and key leaders in the cancer center to develop, write and edit grants, manuscripts and other communications strategically aligned with the CCSG and Sylvester’s strategic plan. Responsible for the editing of strategically important grant applications, manuscripts, reports and other communications for grammar, readability, clarity, consistency in information, tone and voice, and conformance with any applicable RFA requirements; as well as for leading the development of and maintaining the NCI Cancer Center Support Grant (CCSG) templates and RPPR progress report templates for each proposal section. 

* Oversees and participates in the writing and editing of key reports required to maintain NCI designation, state of Florida funding and philanthropic relationships, including but not limited to the CCSG, the CCSG RPPR, FACCA annual reports, FACCA three-year reports, Pap Corps annual report, Sylvester Foundation annual report and Sylvester’s strategic plan.

* Works directly with the Cancer Center Director on priority writing projects.  Collaborates and participates with principal investigators (PIs) to write and edit new and revised grant applications, associated annual reports and manuscripts.
Supervises staff in the Proposal Development and Scientific Writing Team to complete key communication efforts for the Cancer Center including, but not limited to, grants and grant components, policies and workflows, email communications, newsletter development and collaborative communications with institutional areas including University of Miami Development UHealth Marketing and Communications.  

Job Duties:

50% - Development, writing and editing of grants, manuscript, policies and priority communications

Works with PIs to develop, write and edit complex grants such as multi-PI, program project grants, SPORES and the CCSG or other grants of strategic importance to Sylvester in alignment with RFA requirements, the CCSG and Sylvester’s strategic plan. Contributions to this process are informed by Sylvester’s science and lend continuity of tone and voice throughout the application.
Regularly attends research program meetings to ensure familiarity with Sylvester PIs and their research.
Works with PIs to develop, write and edit manuscripts of strategic importance to Sylvester in alignment with the CCSG and Sylvester’s strategic plan. 
Works with Sylvester leadership to develop, write and edit documents and communications of strategic importance to Sylvester.
Provides mentorship/instruction in scientific writing to junior faculty and trainees through instruction and coaching.
Leads development of grant, report, publication, policy and workflow templates and writing resources, including style guides.
In collaboration with the Sylvester pre-award team and University of Miami entities, maintains expert knowledge of current applicable grant, publication, policy and philanthropic documentation regulations, guidelines, policies, and instructions.
Responsible for working collaboratively with the Sylvester pre-award team to ensure templates and grant application components conform to all RFA requirements and other applicable regulations or policies.


Essential 35% - Writing support for Cancer Center Director

Works directly with the Cancer Center Director on priority writing projects.

Essential 15% - Supervision of Proposal Development and Scientific Writing Team

Responsible for assignment of writing and editing projects among team staff in collaboration with the Executive Director of Cancer Center Operations.
Responsible for strategic development of the team in alignment with the CCSG and Sylvester’s strategic plan.
Responsible for training and professional development of team staff.
Responsible for HR oversight of the team, including personnel issues, approval of leave and hiring of additional or replacement staff.

Education (Preferred):

Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree with five (5) years of relevant experience or Ph.D. with at least three (3) years of relevant experience preferred.

Certification and Licensing:

Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes:

Maintains a strong knowledge of scientific writing including grammar, punctuation, usage, tone and style guides (e.g. AMA, CSE).
