Tenure-Track Faculty Positions in the Population Studies and Disparities Research Program

Department of Oncology
Wayne State University School of Medicine
Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute

The Department of Oncology at Wayne State University School of Medicine and the Population Studies and Disparities Research Program of the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute (KCI), an NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, invites applications for three tenure track positions to start in Fall, 2022.

We are seeking candidates who are highly collaborative to add to the outstanding expertise and research of our team of multidisciplinary faculty across the university and cancer center. All candidates must have a PhD or equivalent in public health, epidemiology, psychology, health communication, or other similar scientific discipline with an outstanding record of high impact research commensurate with level. Potential candidates must demonstrate a commitment to reducing health disparities and will be expected to conduct research that is responsive to the needs and disparities within KCI’s 46-county catchment area in Michigan, with the goal of achieving health equity. Although the candidate will be based in Detroit, a vibrant urban center with a long history of innovation and activism, there is ample opportunity to advance research with regional and statewide reach.

Two positions Open Rank; postings #046336 & #046337 (only apply to one of the positions; not both) in the Population Studies and Disparities Research Program (PSDR). PSDR is committed to identifying key genetic and behavioral risk factors underlying disease onset and progression and developing and testing novel intervention strategies to reduce risk and improve diagnosis, treatment, and outcomes with an emphasis on reducing and/or eliminating cancer health disparities among populations contained within our catchment area. This program includes 28 members from 11 departments and 3 schools at Wayne State University. Program members actively collaborate with members of the other Karmanos research programs: Molecular Imaging, Molecular Therapeutics, and Tumor Biology and Microenvironment. Targeted research areas for these positions include, but are not limited to cancer screening/early detection; cancer prevention and control including lifestyle intervention (e.g. obesity, physical activity), HPV vaccination and genetic testing; and cancer risk and survivorship. We encourage applications from researchers whose work is grounded in implementation science, comparative effectiveness research, digital health, and social determinants of health.

The third open rank for posting #045633 will be a joint hire with Karmanos Community Outreach and Engagement and will work directly with KCI’s Office of Cancer Health Equity and Community Engagement (OHCECE) and their Michigan Cancer HealthLink. This academic-community partnership currently includes 11 diverse Cancer Action Councils with ~130 members across Michigan. CACs include community stakeholders representing African American, Arab/Middle Eastern/North African, LGBTQ, and rural communities, as well as young adult cancer survivors. Candidates will also work with the Research and Advocacy Consortium, a statewide network of over 35 community-based social service organizations, faith-based organizations, public health agencies, and clinics who partner with KCI to disseminate research discoveries and to develop and deliver evidence-based interventions. Potential candidates must demonstrate a commitment to community engagement and health equity.

Successful candidates will join a dynamic and collegial academic setting and receive a competitive start-up package, state-of-the-art core facilities, and an environment that supports multidisciplinary collaboration. Candidates are expected to develop an independent, externally funded research program, contribute to departmental activities, and participate in teaching and trainee mentorship.

Applicants should submit their curriculum vitae along with the names of three referees. Applications will be accepted until a suitable candidate is found. Please apply to the following link:
