Director of Research Marketing and Communications

The NCI-designated UPMC Hillman Cancer Center (HCC), formerly the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute, seeks a Director of Research Marketing and Communications. The incumbent will be a member of the HCC Director’s leadership team and be responsible for building a modern communications operation that serves HCC’s internal and external research marketing and communications needs. In partnership with the HCC Director and Senior Leaders, the Communications Director provides leadership, strategic direction to achieve the goals of elevating HCC research locally, nationally and internationally, and supports Hillman’s NCI-designated mission. The candidate will oversee all products and processes related to research communications at Hillman. The communications director will have the opportunity to develop HCC’s overall research marketing and communications strategy and to build a team to execute their vision. The candidate will work in a highly matrixed environment, partnering closely with colleagues across the University of Pittsburgh, UPMC clinical marketing and public relations, and the HCC development department, to achieve strategic goals and to ensure consistency of messaging across various platforms and stakeholder groups. The incumbent will also support faculty leading Hillman’s community outreach and engagement programs, and education and training programs. A successful candidate will be a leader and a team player capable of a high degree of diplomacy and experience building and managing relationships.

Desired candidate has a Masters degree in writing, journalism, technical communication or science. Alternate degree fields will be considered/accepted depending on the nature and depth of the experience as it relates to this position. Must have 6-9 years of successful experience in the management of strategic communications and public relations activities in a non-profit environment. Proven experience in building or leading teams and prior relevant role in NCI designated Cancer Center preferred.
