Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute is seeking to hire for the position of Director for its NCI-designated Cancer Center. The Cancer Center at Sanford Burnham Prebys in La Jolla, California, is an internationally recognized leading organization in cancer research. The Cancer Center has received continuous funding from the National Cancer Institute’s (NCI) Cancer Centers Program since 1981, under the designation of Cancer Center for Basic Research. The Center received an “Outstanding” merit review by the NCI in the recent (May 2020) competing renewal for the next 5 years. The Cancer Center is home to 30 faculty members and three research programs — Tumor Initiation and Maintenance; Cancer, Molecules and Structure; and Tumor Microenvironment and Cancer Immunology. The Programs are buoyed by an underlying infrastructure that consists of 10 Shared Resources, including the Conrad Prebys Center for Chemical Genomics, which is a nationwide resource supporting chemical biology and drug discovery.

The Director of the Cancer Center will serve as principal investigator for the NCI Cancer Center Support Grant (CCSG) and is responsible for overall management of the CCSG’s budget, progress reports and competitive renewals. The Director is responsible for the overall operations and scientific direction of the Cancer Center. S/he is expected to work closely with the Program Leaders to establish research priorities and spearhead research growth in the Cancer Center and interact with scientific leadership in the Institute to foster an interdisciplinary, collaborative research environment. S/he will be expected to continue to increase cancer-focused translational research in the Cancer Center.

The Director is expected to devote at least half of their effort to research and to maintain an NIH/NCI-funded laboratory, working at the cutting edge of modern, basic and translational cancer research. The Director (M.D., Ph.D., or both) should be an internationally recognized leader in the field of cancer biology. The Director should be well known and regarded by NCI, and prior experience with the Cancer Centers’ Program is preferred. The Director should be an outstanding communicator, have effective verbal and written expression, and serve as a champion of collaborative (team-based) multi-disciplinary research. Prior management experience and successful construction of large collaborative research grants are highly desirable characteristics. Additionally, a strong commitment to advancing translational research is required, including the ability to forge strategic partnerships with clinical enterprises. The Director is expected to have excellent administrative and interpersonal skills, such that s/he engenders trust and exhibits self-awareness in his/her interactions with others. S/he is expected to be a charismatic leader and function as the external face for the Cancer Center’s fundraising activities, business development opportunities and media/PR events.
