The Alvin J. Siteman Cancer Center (SCC) at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis invites applications and nominations for the position of Director, Ambulatory Operations.

This is a career defining opportunity to not only direct day-to-day operations, but to take part in the early stages of planning and designing the new four-story, 180,000 sq. ft. Siteman Cancer Center ambulatory facility slated to be opened in 2022.  The facility will provide for a patient-centered, team-focused multidisciplinary approach to patient care leading to a unified plan coordinated by the combined expertise of multidisciplinary teams of medical professionals, scientists and educators. 

Siteman Cancer Center is an international leader in cancer treatment, research, prevention, education and community outreach. It is the only cancer center in Missouri to hold the prestigious Comprehensive Cancer Center designation, an “Exceptional” rating from the National Cancer Institute and membership in the National Comprehensive Cancer Network.  The Center offers the expertise of more than 450 Washington University research scientists and physicians who provide care for nearly 10,000 newly diagnosed cancer patients each year. A full range of advanced diagnostic and treatment services are available for patients with all types of cancer. Scientists and physicians affiliated with Siteman hold more than $145 million annually in basic and clinical oncology research grants; patients have access to more than 500 therapeutic clinical trials.

Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer of Washington University School of Medicine’s faculty practice plan and in a matrix relationship to the Chairs of the Departments of Medicine and Surgery and to BJH leadership for hospital-based technical services, the Director will have overall responsibility for all clinical services to be provided in Siteman Cancer Center’s ambulatory facility, including management of multidisciplinary clinics, lab, imaging, support services and educational programs.  The Director will be responsible for ensuring optimal patient experience, incorporating innovative care models, providing high quality of care, ensuring superior performance of personnel, and maximizing efficiency of clinical workflow.  The Director will work with Washington University School of Medicine and Barnes-Jewish Hospital leadership to ensure coordination across entities and achievement of mutual goals. 

The successful candidate, at minimum, will have a master’s degree in a healthcare-related field or business administration and a minimum of five years of experience in management of ambulatory clinic operations. Experience working in a large, complex, matrixed healthcare organization is required.  Preferred qualifications include five to ten years of relevant work experience in cancer services; experience in facility start-up and design; RN licensure with clinical oncology experience; work experience in an academic medical center.  Interpersonal and political skills essential for succeeding in a complex matrix environment with additional external institutional relationships are essential.
