Hollings Cancer Center (HCC) at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) is seeking a highly experienced Associate Director (AD) for Research Administration who will also serve as the HCC’s Chief Administrative Officer (CAO).  HCC is the only National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated matrix cancer center in South Carolina.  HCC is focused on state-of-the-art cancer research and patient care, training the next generation of cancer researchers, and community outreach.  The Cancer Center has 104 members, 4 scientific programs, 5 Cancer Center Support Grant (CCSG)-supported shared resources and a peer-reviewed funding base of $33 million direct costs. 

The AD for Research Administration and CAO reports to the HCC Director and is a key member of the senior leadership team responsible for providing strategic planning, management, and overall administrative supervision for all research-related activities at HCC, including oversight of shared resources and clinical research operations.  The AD/CAO is integrally involved in the development, implementation, and programmatic evaluation of the Center’s research efforts, which are essential to maintaining and renewing the Center’s NCI designation every five years.  As part of these efforts, this high-level executive position will also be responsible for aligning efforts with campus-wide marketing, communications, research, and development offices to support both clinical and research dimensions of HCC.  The AD/CAO works independently to perform assigned duties, and interacts frequently with other senior leaders at HCC, MUSC, and MUSC Health. As appropriate, he/she will serve as a representative of the Center on various institutional leadership committees and boards.  This position also has administrative accountability for HCC’s assigned space, investments, budget, and information systems associated with the Center’s research operations.

The AD/CAO manages multiple related teams of managers and professional staff responsible for leadership within HCC and serves as a liaison to academic colleges and departments, health system leadership, professional organizations, and administrative units of the University.  This position has overall responsibility for the management, operations, financial, outreach, and programming for the Center.

A bachelor’s degree in business, public administration, policy, or other research administration-relevant field, is required.  A Master’s or PhD in related field is desired.  Candidates also must have 7+ years in research administration, excellent written and oral communication skills, and excellent computer skills. Familiarity with NCI CCSG requirements and experience with NCI-funded cancer centers is highly desired.
