The Associate Director of Research Finance Administration provides effective leadership for the Duke Cancer Institute’s sponsored research and a diverse team of over twenty research administration professionals. The position will identify, develop, and implement strategic initiatives to meet the growing needs of the DCI’s Clinical Research Teams in financial management and reporting practices, compliance, and the implementation of effective IT tools. The Director will provide expertise and guidance on research policies, procedures, and sponsor regulations in grants and contract management to a staff of more than twenty who manage the sponsored research portfolios. This position includes interfacing and coordination with the Principal Investigators, Clinical Research teams, and the Oncology Clinical Research Unit primarily through the Assistant Research Practice Managers. The position reports directly to the DCI Director of Finance with an indirect report to the DCI Director of Research Strategy and Operations.
The candidate will serve as an expert resource to the DCI Research Finance Team and the Clinical Research teams in areas of financial practices and policies as it relates to the daily operational activities. As well as the management and compliance of sponsored funding in basic science and site-based clinical research to include: financial analysis and reporting, federal regulatory grant compliance, and development of best practices to improve financial management effectiveness. Specifically support the DCI’s staff in terms of adherence to Duke financial policies and procedures.
Candidate are strongly preferred to possess expertise in clinical research portfolio management with experience in one or more of the following areas: working with and/or developing a clinical trials management system, contracts and negotiating, research patient interactions, billing compliance, financial analysis, financial reporting, and pre- & post-award grants management for a diverse sponsored research portfolio.
Prefer candidates with 10 or more years of experience in a progressively responsible management role in research administration managing large organizations (20+) staff. A Bachelor’s degree in English, communications, science, business or a related field is required. Advanced degree is highly desirable with demonstration of an understanding and familiarity with a broad range of science or technical subject matter. Seven years of experience working with extramural grants and contracts or an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience.
