The National Cancer Institute is supporting the development of oncologic
Imaging Response Assessment Teams (IRATs) to advance the role of imaging
in
assessment of response to therapy and to increase the application of
quantitative
anatomic, functional, and molecular imaging endpoints in clinical therapeutic
trials.
NCI’s Cancer Centers and Cancer Imaging programs are providing
funding to eight NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers to establish
IRATs as formal shared resources. The IRATs Network and project aim
to strengthen clinical collaboration between imaging scientists and
oncologic investigators; integrate IRAT teams into the protocol planning
process of clinical trial design; and facilitate an ongoing exchange
of ideas that will serve to advance the role of imaging as a biomarker
in the oncology community and ultimately impact the clinical management
of cancer and cancer risk.
