The Windy City played host to the 2010 AACI/CCAF Annual Meeting on October 3-5. The meeting program was jointly formulated by AACI and the Cancer Center Administrators Forum (CCAF), and this event was co-sponsored by Vanderbilt School of Medicine and AACI. Attendance included about 250 cancer center directors and executive-level administrators, along with leaders of national cancer research and advocacy groups, industry, and government health agencies.
Mary-Claire King, PhD, accepted the 2010 AACI Distinguished Scientist Award at the meeting and presented a very well-received talk entitled, "Inherited Breast and Ovarian Cancer: An Example of Personalized Genomic Medicine".
The 2010 AACI Distinguished Public Service Award was presented to U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH). Sen. Brown delivered pre-recorded remarks and Jessica McNiece, a health legislative assistant to Sen. Brown, accepted the award on his behalf.
The meeting featured a panel discussion on efforts to develop collaborative clinical and research programs between children’s hospitals and cancer centers. Panelists also explore issues surrounding adolescent and young adult cancer care. Other featured talks focused on personalized medicine and proton therapy, with scientific sessions exploring mouse models of human cancer and projects funded through the National Cancer Institute’s Chemical Biology Consortium.
AACI acknowledged organizations that provided unrestricted educational grants and organizations providing program and activity support. The Association received unrestricted educational grants from Amgen; Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals, Inc.; Exelixis; GE Healthcare; Genentech A Member of the Roche Group; Millennium: The Takeda Oncology Company; Onyx Pharmaceuticals, Inc.; OSI Pharmaceuticals, Inc.; sanofi-aventis U.S.; and, Varian Medical Systems. AACI also received an R-13 Conference Grant in support of the 2010 AACI/CCAF Annual Meeting. These grants are awarded annually in support of national or international scientific meetings, conferences, and workshops that are of value in promoting the goals of the National Cancer Program. In addition, AACI thanked Amgen, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Elekta, Forte Research Systems, sanofi-aventis US, Susan G. Komen for the Cure and Velos for their generous support of ongoing AACI initiatives and programs.
